De-escalation Training for Law Enforcement |
THE TRAINING De-escalation Training for Law Enforcement is an 8-hour course of instruction that focuses on four principles of safety. Along with prioritizing the essential need of officer safety, the principles emphasize safety of all persons involved and safety of the community. De-escalation Training for Law Enforcement provides instruction on identifying the signs, symptoms, and presentations of psychiatric disorders, developmental disorders, age related disorders, cognitive disorders, and substance abuse disorders. Training videos developed specifically for law enforcement response to these types of situations are incorporated, reviewed, and discussed. (A 4-hour version of the law enforcement course, "De-escalation Training for Law Enforcement - Intervention Strategies" is also available and omits this clinical portion of the 8-hour course for those officers well trained in behavioral health issues.) In receiving this training, law enforcement officers will learn techniques to respond effectively, interact rationally, and remain calm in emotionally charged situations. Officers will also learn how to recognize hooks and triggers as a method to create empathy and establish a resolution. Additionally, officers will learn simple acronyms that will contribute to quick and effective implementation of skills that can be used to safely guide officers' decisions, judgment, and actions in these emotionally charged situations. During this course of instruction, dispositions to a call for service regarding behavioral health issues will be discussed. Finding the most effective and sustainable long-term solution to a situation will be encouraged. Officers will be trained to consider all local resources before deciding the disposition of various presented calls for service. This course is taught in a high-energy, casual, and interactive format. Scenarios based on actual calls for service are incorporated to demonstrate the techniques presented and encourage further discussion. A manual is provided for each attendee to take notes and follow along with the instruction. Those successfully completing the course will receive a certificate of attendance. | THE PAST COMMENTS "This was one of the few LEO trainings that I wish would have been longer.
